Evergreen Placemats

My own pattern

A friend gave me this material and it just seemed perfect for placemats. I sketched out a pattern, figured out the measurements, and started sewing. I put the 'tops' together in one evening.

Then, I knew I wanted to machine finish them for durability. I had never done free motion quilting, but I thought placemats would be an easy place to start. I bought a free-motion foot for my machine, spent 10 minutes practicing, and jumped right into finishing the placemats. I stitched over the trees and then did stitch-in-the-ditch (still free motion because I don't have a walking foot) around the different fabric pieces.

I still have a lot of room for improvement and perfecting my skills, but I was very pleased that I felt comfortable machine finishing them after only practicing for 10 minutes. To think, I've been putting off trying free-motion quilting for months!
