Mom's Kitties

Radiant New York Beauty variation
large wall-hanging

In the recent quilting magazines I kept seeing this book called Radiant New York Beauties by Valori Wells. It had a purple, red, and blue quilt on the front that had Radiant New York beauty blocks of varying colors. Months went by and finally I decided I had to have this book, I had looked at it too many times not to find out what was inside.

I ordered the book online. At the same time my mom ordered it from the store. Her copy came in first (which she ordered for me). The book is amazing - it has a wide variety of New York Beauties including modern variations and more contemporary designs. There are also photos of flowers, seashells, and pottery that inspired the author in creating the quilts. I love it.

Then I ran across this cat pattern that's based on the New York beauty block. The design has been out for years, I just never felt like doing curves in a quilt years ago. So now I am combining the cat blocks with other standard blocks to create a wall hanging. The fabric I am using is a collection of purple and green florals that my mom gave me a while ago. I've added to it several other pieces that I picked up on a recent one-day fabric shopping trip to Sequim and Port Angeles. Both stores were well worth the trip.

I've included pictures of the fabric I'm starting with and some florals that I'm using for inspiration in putting together the quilt.

The Stitchin Post
Quilt store of Jean Wells, Valori Wells mother. Jean Wells started the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. I have not been to the store, but I highly recommend their books.
The Stitching Heron
The quilt store we visited in Sequim, Washington. Lots of bright, floral inspired fabric. Smaller collections of batiks and asian prints.
Quilted Strait
The second store we visited in Port Angeles, Washington. Fat quarters everywhere! I also loved her batiks and kids fabric.
