Our Local Deer

Since the deer are now coming around when it's light out, I have better pictures. I've replaced the old murky ones with my recent daytime pictures. A couple days ago I managed to get a picture of one of the bucks that's hanging around in the neighborhood.

I also credit the better pictures to the curiousity of deer too. They like to come and check out the construction site, especially when the equipment is running.

New pictures on the next page! I caught the bucks on camera as they crossed the front yard one day. The first picture shows how close they are - I'm taking pictures through the window in the office. They are less than 50 feet away. I was afraid to go open the front door to take the pictures because the bucks tend to be more flightly than the does. In the second picture, I said "hey guys" and they both turned around to look.

Now you have to look closely. In the third picture down in the first column there is a doe bedded down behind the log. I happened to be watching her walk around the yard when she laid down, otherwise I never would have spotted her. Then there is the elusive chipmunk. They rarely hold still long enough to be photographed. And the wild rabbit! Luckily we only have one. :)

Finally, the excitement of the summer - COUGAR TRACKS! Two of the construction guys saw the cougar one morning on the job site. I went around looking for tracks and found these in a wet spot near our driveway. This spot is also frequented by the deer. We did report the cougar sighting to the Department of Wildlife, but they told me it was probably a bob cat or maybe even a deer that was mistaken for a cougar. The tracks don't lie folks! Then in mid August I spotted more cougar tracks in the retention pond.

This fall we have a picture of a salamander and some really nice pictures of a chipmunk (thanks Kaaren!).
